The Italian President rejects the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi

The Italian head of state on Thursday rejected Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s resignation and asked him to address Parliament to get a clear picture of the political situation, President Sergio Mattarella’s office said in a statement.

Raghi had announced his resignation plan on Thursday after the 5 Star Movement, a coalition party, refused to back him in a vote of confidence over his plan to combat soaring prices.

“The coalition of national unity that supported this government no longer exists,” said Draghi, the former European Central Bank president who has been prime minister of a broad coalition since February 2021.

It was not clear how Draghi would react to the intervention of Mattarella, the chief arbiter in Italian politics.

The confidence vote had become a focal point for tensions within the Draghi government as its parties prepare to fight each other in national elections due in early 2023.

The 5-Star Party wanted Draghi to do more to help families deal with soaring inflation, caused in part by the war in Ukraine, even if it meant a steeper rise in government borrowing.

The 5-Star Party’s decision to boycott the confidence vote sparked the sequence of events that led 74-year-old Draghi to announce his resignation.

Draghi had said he did not want to run a government without the 5-Star Party, which emerged as the largest party in the previous 2018 election but has since suffered resignations and a loss of public support.

Mattarella can try to persuade Draghi to form another government, find a new acting leader to lead Italy to an election next year, or call snap elections.

Italy has not had an autumn election since World War II, as this is usually when the budget is drawn up and approved by Parliament. The Italian President rejects the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi
