The Jan. 6 clip of Josh Hawley fleeing Capitol rioters proves he’s an opportunist

Washington is full of tough people. Currently there is 91 members of Congress with military experience. In addition, there are several former first responders: two former sheriffs, a police chief, three other police officers, a former fire chief, and a former firefighter. There are also two former CIA employees and one FBI agent.

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri isn’t one of Washington’s tough guys, but he’s certainly tried to make his mark as one.

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri isn’t one of Washington’s tough guys, but he’s certainly tried to make his mark as one.

Perhaps the most significant way he has attempted this is to be first senator to announce his opposition until the December 2020 electoral college vote count — a position from which he has never deviated, even after militants supporting Donald Trump stormed the Capitol, leaving several dead.

But during the prime-time hearing on Thursday, January 6, the House Special Committee investigating the Capitol riot showed the world that Hawley was a national coward when he presented footage of the senator taken during the January 6 attack .

the same preschool, Education at Stanford and Yale Senator, who was photographed with his fist in the air on the morning of January 6 as a show of solidarity with the feverish MAGA people who gathered around the Capitol, was later caught on video sprinting frantically from rioters, as they descended upon the Capitol.

For effect, the Jan. 6 House Committee even rewound the clip, played it in slow motion, and shone a spotlight on the senator in his tight-fitting suit, who scurried away in a panic.

It wasn’t a good look for Hawley, but it was perhaps the most honest the American public has seen from this young politician with rabies presidential aspirations. The footage showed Hawley as nothing more than a blatant opportunist. He was fine raising his fist to goad Trump supporters when he was safely hidden behind security and metal barricades, but when they approached him it was a different story.

And that pretty much sums up Hawley’s entire rise on the national political scene – one in which he has made a model ruffled feathers of other Republicans and biting his mentors in the back as he carved his way to national prominence.

But Thursday’s pictures managed in just seconds to do what his political opponents have failed to do since Hawley surfaced in Washington: show that he is a crook.

Though he eventually brought himself to it Condemnation of the violence of the uprisingHawley has never backed down from his stance that the election was stolen – despite the fact that there is absolutely no evidence to support these claims.

As a former Attorney General and Supreme Court clerk with impeccable academic credentials, Hawley also knows these claims are unfounded, but he chooses to ignore the truth to pursue his personal political ambitions and uses these untruths to flatter the MAGA base of the party. “I will never apologize for giving a voice to the millions of Missourians and Americans who have concerns about the integrity of our elections,” Hawley said in a statement a day after violent Trump supporters raided the Capitol.

Of course, the internet picked up on Hawley’s ridiculousness and remembered his sprint to safety in the Capitol, even leaving traces to match the clips of Hawley fleeing. My personal favorite is The version of the Lincoln project, with Hawley sprinting to the tune of “Running With the Devil,” though late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert’s choice of a cartoon sound effect finishes as a close second.

In response to all this attention in the current news cycle, Hawley unsurprisingly shows no shame by doing what he did during the post-November 2020 election turmoil — capitalizing on his newfound meme fame donations to his campaign.

On Friday morning, he began selling a new 11-ounce ceramic coffee mug that features his famous fist in the air accompanied by a macho riff of Missouri’s state motto: show me strong!

Given what has happened over the past 18 months, it’s easy to forget the crucial role Hawley has played in supporting Trump’s efforts to reverse the peaceful transfer of power — especially when the senator still has a job in Washington. But whatever the implications of Thursday night’s video in his home state of Missouri, Hawley’s new highlight role hasn’t fared well at his workplace.

His Jan. 6 antics, including his now infamous escape, have now made him the subject of endless jokes in Washington. Thursday’s hearing room erupted in laughter after seeing him speed past Capitol police in search of safety – not exactly reflecting the “tough guy” image he’d cultivated as a presidential candidate.
