The joy of rats in Apex Legends

Ranked matches in Apex Legends have a completely different feel to public matches, where everyone dives in unafraid of death and has a big bar-brawl style scrap in the middle of the map.

As the name suggests, Ranked is all about climbing through the ranks, and a few bad plays will demote you. That means everyone plays a little more cautiously.

People actually pick their battles on leaderboards, hang back on a couple of third-party teams that are already fighting, and run away when a fight starts to turn sour.

One of Apex Legends’ best innovations is the respawn system, which lets you grab dead teammates’ banners and revive them at specific points on the map.

But the genius is in the timer – you have just over a minute to get a banner after a teammate dies, or they’re gone forever.

In the leaderboard, you often have to weigh up whether it’s worth risking a run for a banner or whether it’s time to run.

If you choose the latter and are the last survivor in your squad, that means one thing above all: rat time. Being a good rat is an art form.

In leaderboards, your finishing position is the most important metric for earning leaderboard points.

Kills and assists only become important if you finish the game in the top eight anyway. So the rat’s goal is to run and hide and try to come in second – or, even better, dive into the final battle and claim victory.

Since this is a battle royale game, you can’t just hide and seek throughout the game. You often have to run to the zone, find a small campsite and wait it out.

Sometimes the best tactic is to play on the edge of the zone and go with the Wall of Death crowding players together.

Since the maps are big as they are, Respawn basically created a meta hide-and-seek in Apex Legends.

Spot an imperfect piece of the environment on a cliff, and you might be able to nest there and watch players walk by unsuspectingly.

Octane, Vantage, Valkyrie, and Ash are particularly agile rats thanks to their movement abilities.

Hiding like this creates those tense moments where you crouch between two teams and try not to make a sound. A whole team jumped right over my head. It is exciting.

You’ll also need to know when to crouch and when to risk running noises, limit your speed boosts, and balance them with gunfire.

Being a good rat is almost like being good at an entirely different game – a game within a game – and it’s about time rats got more respect.
