The Kemp Town community was shaken when the church was destroyed

A CHURCH was destroyed in an alleged burglary in the middle of the night.

St George’s in Kemp Town, Brighton was ransacked by the attackers, who slammed a cash register onto the floor and forced open locked drawers.

The church cafe was also damaged in the early morning incident, which is being investigated by police.

The church’s pastor, Father Andrew Manson-Brailsford, said he was incredulous at the “heartless” behavior.

“You almost want to give up,” he says.

“Of course you can’t give up, you have to keep going because you have to do the work and make sure people are taken care of.

“It’s depressing considering we’re doing so much good work and people still want to pick on other people.”

The damage forced the cancellation of major community events yesterday.

Speak Out, a group for young adults with learning disabilities, was unable to use the church as planned.

“My suspicion is that they knew where they were going and what they wanted,” Father Andrew said.

“They searched various cupboards and our display case.

“The result of that is that they did a lot of damage but didn’t really get away with very much.”

Photos show a ripped open filing cabinet, ransacked closets and targeted kitchen cabinets.

But thankfully the church’s silver cross, which is kept in a display case, was not taken – although the unit was also forcefully opened.

While Father Andrew said he found “three or four sacks full” of items “dumped” at the door.

He believes the burglar was disturbed and fled the scene.

And since posting about the incidents on Facebook, the church has received a tremendous amount of support, which Father Andrew said was very moving.

In a Facebook message, one well-wisher said: “All you can do is keep going.

“Unfortunately, as time goes on, more and more people will need your help. There is a lot of goodwill out there.”
