A “reckless and calculated” heroin user who murdered three people and raped his last victim within six days has been sentenced to life in prison.

Anthony Russell previously pleaded guilty to the murders of Julie Williams, 58, and her son David Williams, 32, who were attacked by him in separate apartments in Coventry.

He also admitted to murdering Nicole McGregor, 31, whose body was found in the woods near Leamington Spa.

At the time, she was five months pregnant, with the jury declaring he agreed to commit the rape of her on Thursday following a retrial at Warwick Crown Court.

Russell was not present for sentencing today.

The court heard how he refused to board a van from the prison.

The court stated that it resulted in “a dangerous situation” for the prison officers and the attempt to transport him to court was dropped.

Mr Justice Wall said he would continue sentencing in Russell’s absence rather than adjourn the proceedings.

The judge said life order guidelines require that sentences be reserved for “particularly serious” cases in which they are required as a primary punishment.

He told Russell in his absence: “None of these crimes are accidental or unmotivated.

“I have no doubt that this is a case described as particularly serious.

“There were three murders – each segregated in time and place.

“Each was the result of a single, protracted and brutal act of murder. Each was involved in a very substantial use of violence.”

The judge found Russell particularly dangerous and manipulative, adding: “This is one of those cases that deserves a lifetime warrant.

“You will be incarcerated for the rest or your life and will never be eligible to apply to the Parole Board for your release.”

The 39-year-old defendant of Riley Square, Coventry, assaulted Miss McGregor hours after she showed him a photo of her baby.

Mr Williams was killed on October 21, 2020, and Mrs Williams’ mother on October 25.

Russell also told her future partner and child’s father “I bet you can’t wait for it to come out” within hours of her disappearance – upon learning he raped and killed her. .

The killer strangled Mr. Williams with a lanyard and left his body under his bed, where police found it five days later, with 87 wounds.

Russell later testified that he had killed a man who “had sex with his girlfriend”.

Nichola McGregor was five months pregnant when she was killed

Russell strangled Mr. Williams’ mother in a “violent and sustained attack” in which she was hit five times in the head and neck, prosecutors said.

She had 113 separate injuries, and is presumed dead when she discovered Russell had murdered her son.

CCTV footage of Ms McGregor, who lives in an apartment in Leamington, was shown to the jury during the trial, showing her accompanied by Russell at 7:45pm on October 26.

In her opening remarks, prosecutor Zoe Johnson QC said of the footage: “This was the last time Nicole was seen alive.

“Just three hours after meeting the defendant, it appears that Nicole agreed to walk with the defendant to Newbold Comyn.

“We suggest that the defendant lured Nicole to Comyn, not for sex, but more likely for drugs.

“The defendant murdered Nicole McGregor shortly after that image was taken, just hours after they met.”

After the murder, he pretends to help McGregor’s partner find her.

The killer eventually became the subject of a nationwide manhunt, and fled Leamington by robbing a 78-year-old man’s car.

Russell rang the pensioner’s doorbell to ask for directions, and when the victim was distracted, he hit his head with a brick from behind, causing him to fracture his skull and bleed to his brain.

The killer was arrested on 30 October after police discovered the stolen Ford C-Max parked on a road near Burton on Trent, Staffordshire.

Armed officers found Russell sleeping on the backseat.

While in custody, he told officers: “I admit it, I did it.”

A statement from the Williams family, read out by Zoe Johnson QC, said: “Not only our dear, loving and caring sister, our dear, loving and caring grandson also was taken.

“We mourn the traumatic loss of our sister and nephew. We love the loss and try to move on, but the pain and grief will never go away.

“We hope not only for our family, but also for Nicole McGregor, the accused, to be brought to justice.”
