The LAPD was “prepared” to arrest Will Smith after Chris Rock’s attack

Oscar showrunner Will Packer said the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) was “prepared” to arrest Will Smith after his attack on Chris Rock at the awards show.

Acker said Rock was “very dismissive” of the options the LAPD had given him when officers went to his office to speak with the comedian, who was told the incident was classified as “battery.”

It comes after reports from Hollywood trading house Variety that Smith met with Academy leaders on Tuesday to discuss his outbreak and has apologized to CEO Dawn Hudson and President David Rubin.

The 53-year-old won Best Actor for King Richard but stormed onto the stage before his win after responding to a joke by Rock that referred to his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

The academy said Smith was asked to leave the ceremony after the incident but declined.

A formal review has been launched to discuss what disciplinary action will be taken, and Smith will reportedly be given an opportunity to present a written defense before the academy’s board meets again on April 18.

The LAPD said no charges had been filed against him, but according to Packer, they told Rock he had the authority to do so.

“They said that’s battery, that was the word they were using at that moment, they said, ‘We’re going to go get him, we’re ready to go get him now,'” Packer said in a clip from an interview with ABC.

“‘You can file a complaint, we can arrest him,’ they presented the options.”

He added, “While they were talking, Chris was very dismissive of those options, he said ‘no, I’m fine’ … and even to the point where I said ‘rock, let her finish.’

“The other LAPD officers finished laying out his options and they said, ‘Do you want us to do something?’ And he said ‘no’.”

The interview with Packer is scheduled to air Friday on Good Morning America.

Variety reported that Smith explained his actions during his meeting with academy leaders Tuesday, knowing there would be consequences.

The Academy Board of Governors met Wednesday, where it was decided that disciplinary action against Smith could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.

“While we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize that we could have handled the situation differently,” the statement said, adding that the actor’s actions ” a deeply shocking, traumatic event” to be witnessed in person and on television.”

Smith returned to his seat at the Dolby Theater after beating Rock and twice shouted to the stage, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”

Rock had joked about Pinkett Smith’s buzzcut, saying onstage, “Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2.”

The Magic Mike XXL star and Red Table Talk host has previously opened up about her struggles with alopecia and how it prompted her to shave her head.

A shocked rock continued to present best documentary gong won by Summer Of Soul.

Smith later returned to the stage, accepting the Oscar and delivering an emotional speech about the importance of protecting the family.

Rock, 57, first addressed the incident publicly at a stand-up show in Boston on Wednesday night.

According to audio from the performance shared by Variety, Rock told the crowd, “How was your weekend? I don’t have much on my mind about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show that I wrote ahead of this weekend.

“I’m still processing what happened. So someday I’m gonna talk about this shit. And it’s going to be serious and fun.”

He reportedly received a standing ovation from his audience before his set.

Smith formally apologized to Rock on Instagram, admitting he reacted “emotionally” to the joke, but said “violence in all its forms is toxic and destructive.”

Pinkett Smith also called for a “season of healing” following the incident.
