Naomi Osaka bounced back from her tearful end at Indian Wells with a comfortable win over Astra Sharma at the Miami Open.
saka was moved to tears after being scolded in her second-round loss to Veronika Kudermetova 10 days ago at the BNP Paribas Masters.
A spectator reportedly shouted “Naomi, you shit,” and Osaka complained to the referee. When she went to serve in the third game of the game, she visibly cried.
The Japanese player, who missed parts of the 2021 season due to mental health issues, was taunted early in the game and that was no doubt a major factor as she lost 0-6, 4-6 to world No. 24.
But there were no such problems for the four-time Grand Slam champion against world No. 96 Australia Sharma in a routine 6-3, 6-4 first-round win.
“For me, I just didn’t want to let anything upset me,” Osaka said in her on-court interview.
“The last game I played wasn’t the best memory for me. I just wanted to prove that I can come back here and compete and have the best attitude I could.”
