After a period of US exclusivity, The Last of Us Part 1 PlayStation 5 Firefly Edition is coming to the UK.
If you’re interested in getting your hands on this edition – which comes with the base game, the prequel chapter Left Behind, the American Dreams comic series (which itself has a new cover), a SteelBook showcase, and a plethora of early unlocks for the game – you can go to PlayStation store to pre-order a copy.
The release date is currently listed as Thursday January 26th, 2023.
This edition doesn’t come cheap, however, and will set you back £99.99. Developer Naughty Dog has defended its decision to re-release The Last of Us Part 1 for a third time with such a hefty price tag, saying it’s not a “cash grab” – something many have accused the project of.
Following the announcement of this remake, animator Robert Morrison – who worked on The Last of Us Part 1 and is now at Sony studio Bend – defended the remake, stating, “Actually, it’s the most carefully built and crafted project I’ve seen have or have been a part of throughout my career”.
I also raised this issue with Naughty Dog developers Matthew Gallant and Shaun Escayg when I spoke to them about the remake in August. This is what they said about the prices:
“The Last of Us Part 1 is a game that will rival any other game coming out this year. It’s a full PS5 game developed using all of our latest and greatest engine technology. [It has been] developed to the point where we’re able to improve fidelity and graphics and framerate and combat and AI – just about every dimension we could, we wanted to push that as much as possible and just make this version of the game seamless with everything else , coming out on modern consoles.
“So from our perspective, this is a PS5 game. This is a game that was newly made and [that] speaks for the price.”
If The Last of Us is your thing then January is shaping up to be a pretty good month. Along with this Firefly edition of the first game, next month will also see the debut of HBO’s television adaptation of the Naughty Dog series.
This adaptation, starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, opens January 15 in the US, which makes for a January 16 launch here in the UK on Sky Atlantic.
