Mikhail Gorbachev, who became the last leader of the Soviet Union to fight a losing battle to save a crumbling empire but wrought extraordinary reforms that ended the Cold War, has died at the age of 91.

Russian media quoted a statement from the Central Clinical Hospital that he died after a long illness. No further details were given.
