In the closing episode, a cast of well-loved characters returned to the cul-de-sac community of Ramsay Street to say goodbye to the soap opera.

Singers Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, who starred as couple Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell in the 1980s, made their long-awaited return, with Minogue donning her classic denim jumpsuits again.

Among the cameo appearances was Oscar-nominated Margot Robbie, who previously played Donna Freedman, who delivered a loving message, describing her years on Ramsay Street as “one of the best of my entire life.”

Also included was a trio who achieved chart success as singers after their Erinsborough stint: Delta Goodrem, who played Nina Tucker, Natalie Imbruglia, who was Beth Brennan, and Holly Valance, who played Felicity Scully.

In addition to the emotional reunions, the double episode also featured a joyful marriage and a nostalgic tribute to stars past and present.

Another major plot point in the finale was the return of Mike Young, played by Guy Pearce, who decides to move back to Ramsay Street to give his relationship with his former love, Jane Harris, played by Annie Jones, another chance.

Peace and Jones reflected on their reunion in a video shared with Jones after the finale aired, saying, “It’s a little weird, isn’t it?”

Peace agreed, saying, “It’s nice to be working together again. I mean, we’ve remained friends over the years and it’s kind of surreal and also very familiar and kind of like it was just yesterday.”

He added that he thinks fans “might have a little chuckle for themselves” when their characters finally get their happy endings together.

Ben Frow, Chief Content Officer of Paramount UK, said: “I suspect viewers didn’t stay dry as Neighbors left on a high note last night.

“We wanted to give it a fitting, respectful ending and I hope our night dedicated to the neighbors achieved that.

“Last night really is the end of an era. The reaction from viewers overnight was very moving and even if they wished the ending didn’t have to come.

“I hope you liked it. Celebrating the success of Neighbors 37 years at the helm – I’m sure he will live on in people’s hearts and TV memories for a long time to come.” The latest episode of Neighbors attracts 2.5 million viewers
