The London Symphony Orchestra plays the national anthem in memory of the Queen

The London Symphony Orchestra performed a special British national anthem in memory of the Queen.

After a performance at Barbican Hall on Sunday, conductor Sir Simon Rattle led the group to stand and perform the piece, followed by a minute’s silence.

Following news of the late king’s death on Thursday, the orchestra said they would continue with their season-opening performance but that it would be “in memory of Queen Elizabeth II”.

In a statement about the programme, Sir Simon said: “The opening concert of this season, a celebration of 20th and 21st century British music, is our tribute to memory. of Queen Elizabeth II.”

The Queen has been patron of the orchestra since taking the throne in 1952.

Following the king’s death, the orchestra released a statement: “The London Symphony Orchestra is deeply saddened by the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“The Queen has been a Patron of the LSO since she ascended the throne in 1952, continuing the Sovereign’s long association with the orchestra and its players, stretching back to its founding in 2005. 1904.

“The Orchestra is pleased to host the Queen’s performance at numerous concerts and events – from the opening of the Barbican Center in 1982, to hosting a gala dinner at Buckingham Palace in 2015.

“The Queen has been present at some of the most important moments in our history and has been a loyal and devoted supporter of the orchestra throughout her reign.

The Orchestra confirmed their upcoming performances on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays will also go as planned with no change in repertoire but the national anthem will also be played at the beginning of each concert. .
