The prime suspect in what is being described as a serious and ongoing sexual assault against a young woman was released from Garda custody tonight.

The development comes as Independent.ie is able to reveal that the alleged victim in the case, a young mother in her 20s, has left her home in the Leinster area over fears she could be tracked down by the suspect.

It has also emerged that she suffered serious facial injuries when she was allegedly sexually assaulted by the man she knows in a Co Kildare woodland last Sunday afternoon.

A case is now being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), with sources saying this evening that he is likely to face charges in the future.

The 26-year-old suspect, who is described as a “fugitive” and is well known to Gardaí, was questioned by detectives at Kildare Garda Station for a few hours today before being released without charge.

The shocking attack took place in the wooded area of Moore Abbey near Monasterevin last Sunday afternoon.

Sources say the woman was not the victim of a random attack and she knows the suspect who was arrested.

Gardai today issued an appeal to two women who helped the woman contact her after the attack in the woods.

Officers became aware of the attack on Sunday night and after making contact with the victim, she was taken to a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit (SATU) at a Dublin hospital.

According to reports, the woman, in her mid-20s, was also brutally beaten and sustained serious injuries, particularly to her face, during the attack.

Investigators are investigating whether last Sunday’s attack took place over an extended period of time.

They are also investigating whether the victim may have been forced to go into the woods, which are popular with hikers, especially in summer.

Gardai quickly identified the suspect and spent the last few days gathering evidence in the case before carrying out the planned arrest this morning.

The suspect is well known to officers and is believed to be “fickle” and faces a number of charges in court for other offences.

Gardai released details of the arrest operation this morning.

“A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with a serious assault on a woman in his 20s that took place in Monasterevin, County Kildare on Sunday 17 July 2022,” a Garda spokesman said.

“The investigation into this incident is ongoing.

“Gardaí continues to appeal to anyone who was in the Monasterevin area on Sunday 17th between 1pm and 5:20pm and who may have footage (including dashcam) to make this footage available to them.

“Gardaí would particularly like to speak to two women who have assisted the victim.

“Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Kildare Garda Station on 045 527 730, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station,” he added.
