The Making of Conor McGregor vs. Jake Paul: How a Mega Fight Can Become a Reality
Despite the appearance of McGregor, a former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion, taking on new cruiserweight boxer Paul, the fight could be one of the greatest of all time
On paper, a fight between Conor McGregor and Jake Paul’s fight seems doomed from the start – but we said the same about the Irishman’s clash with Floyd Mayweather.
The idea that McGregor could take on Paul looks fanciful at first glance. Former UFC feather and lightweight champion McGregor, who is up against 5-0 cruiserweight boxing rookie Paul, may not seem appetizing on the surface, but with the right publicity, huge amounts of money can be made.
Therein lies the first problem.
Paul and McGregor have very different courtship situations. The YouTube star has his own banner; Most valuable promotions while the Irishman is tied to a lucrative but restrictive UFC contract that ties him to the octagon. He was allowed to fight Mayweather in 2017, but UFC boss Dana White has hinted it was essentially the exception that proves the rule. Since then, not a single fighter has been allowed to transfer while still under contract with the UFC.
Even retired legends of the sport with great organizational appeal like Georges St-Pierre have been spurned by the UFC over the years. The Canadian was offered big money to box Oscar de la Hoya last year but was told he couldn’t do it after retiring without completing his entire 2017 UFC deal.
However, Paul believes there is a chance the relationship between his manager; former UFC chief financial officer Nakisa Bidarian and Audie Attar, who has steered the McGregor ship for years, could lead to the breakthrough. Bidarian was the chief financial officer for promotions during Dubliners’ rise to the top of the sport, including several monstrous paydays.
“His manager, Audie, is very close to my manager, so there’s a relationship there,” Paul said mirror fight . “If he can get out of the contract with Dana White then it’s definitely possible.” And Paul believes he’s the biggest name out there for the Irishman in both disciplines. He is one of the most talked about fighters in the world right now due to his outspoken manner and brash promotional style not dissimilar to the UFC legend’s famous take.
“He’s a businessman,” Paul explained. “And he sees the big numbers that would be enough. I’m the biggest fight for him in MMA or boxing, the biggest name, the biggest fight, and he’s going to want that payday, especially if he keeps losing, right. He’ll think, “Maybe I’ll fight this YouTuber kid and get a W real quick, make a hundred million bucks so it gets more and more real over time.”
Paul is currently without a broadcaster for his next fight, with Showtime Boxing having broadcast his last two and talks ongoing with them and DAZN about his return in August. He is currently in promoter mode as he prepares to stage the undisputed lightweight world title fight between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor at Madison Square Garden in New York tonight.
Paul made his debut on DAZN under the Matchroom Boxing banner and reunites with Eddie Hearn for tonight’s historic duel. Should he resume work with Hearn, another avenue could open up, with the British promoter being a known close friend of White’s. The pair are in regular contact and sat ringside together during last month’s UFC London event at the O2. Hearn is known to be a huge admirer of White’s while narrating the MMA kingpin mirror fight Earlier this year that he was “very fond of Eddie Hearn”.
“Honestly, I spoke to him last night,” Hearn said mirror fight on Tuesday. “I’ll see him in Vegas next week. He’s a great promoter, he doesn’t necessarily need my help but if he needs any advice I’m here as he has given me advice in the past. Friends? Well we don’t go out for beers and stuff but I respect him and stuff like that, I wouldn’t have a problem turning to him if I needed help. This line is always open to him, he was incredibly hospitable to me at all liaisons and I find him to be a gentleman.
“It’s different because I don’t feel threatened by Dana and he doesn’t feel threatened by me. Frank [Warren] feels threatened by me and doesn’t want me around.”
Could Hearn provide what appears to be the missing link in an event between McGregor and Paul? Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith believes the fight will happen one day and they would love to be a part of it, having gotten the ball rolling with the Paul brothers the night before Coronavirus Pandemic two years ago.

“We could be the middle ground,” he joked when the proposal was put to him this week. “Lets see what happens. In boxing I think it would be a close fight and in MMA you have to give it Conor McGregor but what is their weight? I don’t know, but I’m sure we’ll see it someday in some world. Conor McGregor is still in UFC right?”
There is more interest on McGregor’s side now than ever ahead of his disastrous 2021 where he was KO’d by Dustin Poirier in their rematch in January before breaking his leg in the first round of their trilogy fight in July. Before UFC 264, when he faced Poirier for the third time, he was quoted on Fox Sports Australia like I said, he couldn’t take care of Jake and his brother Logan. He branded the pair of dingbats and dismissed them as future opponents.
But asked through in February mirror fight If there was a chance the younger Paul could be his opponent when he returns from his horror injury, McGregor replied: “Never say never”.
