Christian Brueckner’s ex-girlfriend’s father fears Madeleine McCann was in the pedophile’s van when he was shown around.

Dieter Fehlinger, 67, was shown around the VW by Brueckner during a visit to daughter Nicole, 45, in Portugal in 2007.

He previously revealed how the German said he could hide drugs or “even a small child” in an adapted stash.

But now he told Australian television that it haunts him that Madeleine may have been inside.

“I thought about it all the time,” he said.

Nicole met Brueckner at a Christmas party in 2006, she was interrogated by the FBI’s German counterpart about their relationship.

She’s not a suspect.

German prosecutors are believed to be days away from indicting Brueckner on new sex crimes. He is suspected of raping an Irish tour guide and indecently exposing himself to young people in Portugal.

Brueckner was living in a mobile home near Praia da Luz when Madeleine disappeared from a vacation rental in May 2007.

Brueckner is currently serving a prison sentence in Germany for rape and denies any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.

This comes as The Daily Mirror reported that prosecutors are one step closer to indicting Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner on new sex crimes charges.

They have turned over their files to Brückner’s lawyer, the final step under German law before charges are filed.

The paperwork contains evidence allegedly linking him to the rape of an Irish tour guide and indecent revelations.

German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters told Der Spiegel the files were handed over to Brückner’s lawyer Friedrich Fulscher earlier this week. They contain no evidence of Madeleine’s disappearance from her parents’ holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in 2007.

Mr Wolters previously said investigators were certain Brueckner, 45, who was living at the resort, abducted the three-year-old.

Hazel Behan says she was raped in Praia de Rocha in June 2004.

She has waived her right to anonymity and said her masked attacker spoke English with a German accent.

The ordeal she described was similar to the rape Brueckner committed on a pensioner in Praia da Luz in 2005, for which he is still in prison.

Files given to Mr Fulscher also contain evidence allegedly linking Brueckner to two indecent disclosures to children in Portugal. Mr. Wolters: “The defense attorney must be given a reasonable amount of time to process the files and discuss them with his client.
