The Mercedes C-Class is the best car I’ve driven this year

VALENTINE’s day is on Monday but this week I only have my eyes on a hot model.

And here it is, the new Mercedes C-Class, which is an absolute stunner of a pickup truck.

I know we’re only into the second month of 2022 and I’ve only tested about 20 but the C-Class is my favorite car of the year.

For starters, it’s gorgeous, especially in the same AMG Line trim as my test car as this gets you a full bodykit.

This includes larger air intakes on the front bumper, side skirts, rear diffuser along with larger front brakes and dual exhaust pipes at the rear.

The AMG package also includes sport suspension, and even though my test was a diesel, it handled like on the rails.

I know the Kia EV6 SUV has just been awarded Car of the Year in Ireland.

But for me, you can’t beat a regular car for the most enjoyable driving experience.

And front-wheel drive, the rear-wheel drive in the C-Class is almost perfect.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine that produces 163 hp and 380 Nm of torque.

It’s not breathtakingly fast, 0-100kph takes 7.7 seconds with a top speed of 230kph.

CAR SIZE: The saloon has 455 liters of luggage space, while the estate's trunk is 30 liters larger than before, with capacities ranging from 490 to 1510 liters

But the power delivery is super smooth and responsive, and it’s also so quiet, it’s only with a cold start that you’ll notice it’s a diesel.

And the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission shifts gears smoothly, in addition to steering wheel-mounted paddles for manual gear changes if you want to be sportier.

And as a diesel, its range is amazing, almost 1,000 km for a full tank.

Then, to make the C-Class even more economical, it comes with a 48V mild hybrid system.

The Mercedes claims 67mpg, but on a long highway run, I returned an impressive 57mpg.

There are a host of other engine options, five petrol and three diesel.

In addition, there will be a plug-in hybrid petrol and diesel engine version with an electric range of 100km and will be available later this year.

The C-Class comes with a four-door Saloon, a two-door Coupe, a Convertible and a very practical Estate.

The estate boasts a 490-liter trunk that increases to a remarkable 1510 liters when you fold the rear seats down.

But inside the C-Class really shines, there are a few manufacturers that know how to make interiors just right, and Mercedes is one of them.

The C-Class takes luxury to the next level and, like the flagship S-Class, features the next generation of the MBUX infotainment system.

Before, it had two large screens side by side, but now you only have one large 12.3-inch digital instrument display for the driver.

And the new 11.9-inch HD multimedia color touchscreen sits in a corner below the three vents on the dashboard.

It’s huge, the size of a small TV or a large tablet, and the graphics are next level.

Then there’s ambient lighting that comes in 64 different colors to choose from, and it’s best enjoyed at night when the entire cabin lights up.

And I really like the fact that the color of the vents turns red when you increase the temperature, or blue when you lower the temperature – a really cool feature.

It’s also a really safe car, with driver comfort and safety features including, distance assist, steering assist, lane keep assist, ambient sensing and emergency braking function. .

The C-Class is like a mini version of the S-Class but a lot cheaper and smaller so it’s more agile.

It’s the kind of car I can easily live with, especially the diesel engine.

But if money is no object, the AMG C 63 S Coupe will steal my heart.

And that’s because it’s powered by a 4.0-liter, 510-horsepower, twin-turbo, V8 engine, it’s capable of 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and top speed is 290 km/h.

Though I don’t like paying its gas bill.
