The Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak stream reveals the Switch Skill Swap ability, follower quests, and more on Malzeno

During today’s Monster Hunter digital event, Series Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and Director Yoshitake Suzuki shared an in-depth look at Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.

During the presentation, the duo revealed three monsters, the Switch Skill Swap ability, follower quests, and more information about the flagship Elder Dragon, Malzeno.

The Flying Wyvern Seregios, known as the “Thousand Edged Dragon”, returns in the expansion. Known for its high-flying maneuvers and super-sharp bladed scales covering its body, the monster tends to shed its scales in battle. If you get hit by one of the scales, you run the risk of getting bleed status.

In addition to the returning monsters gaining new abilities and behaviors when they appear in master rank quests, two new subtypes for monsters introduced in Monster Hunter Rise will arrive in the expansion. One of these is the newly introduced Aurora Somnacanth, which unleashes a “constantly cooling mist” that can freeze anything that gets too close. It can even glide across the ice to strike, emitting a dangerous icy breath.

Then there’s Magma Almudron, who prefers the heat of lava caves and boosts his attacks with Molten Rock, which can overwhelm you if you’re not careful.

But there’s also the Elder Dragon Malzeno to contend with as he commands a swarm of parasitic beings that can capture and then absorb the energy of their prey. In direct combat, the monster attacks with a vampiric move, and should it inflict you with the Blood Plague status, you both start a duel to see whose life force is depleted first. Should you fail, Malzeno will evolve into an “even more terrifying form” to wreak havoc on the survivors.

Defeating these beasts requires finding new ways to approach combat, and that’s where the Switch Skills ability comes into play.

You can use the Switch Skill Swap ability, which allows you to switch skills between two different loadouts that can be changed on the fly during a hunt. Should you get attacked while performing an ability swap, you can dodge in any direction to avoid danger, or reposition for a continued attack. More information on the Switch abilities available for each of the 14 weapon types will be made available starting May 16th in a series of short videos exploring each weapon.

Sunbreak also gives you new ways to connect with the game’s characters through new follower quests. These single player hunts allow you to take on and complete quests featuring your favorite characters from history. Each henchman has their own specialization and will even help you by restoring your health, setting traps and even riding monsters.

Elgado Outpost members such as Fiorayne, Luchika, Jae, Admiral Galleus, and Master Arlow will be accessible as followers, in addition to Kamura Village members such as Hinoa and Minoto. You’ll unlock followers as you progress through the story, and you can even earn rewards for completing follower quests.

And finally, a cool Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Nintendo Switch Pro Controller was unveiled during the presentation. It includes Malzeno and will be released alongside the expansion when it releases for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam on June 30th. While no price has been announced, it will likely cost the same as previous Pro Controllers, or $69.99.
