The moon is “drifting away from the earth” – and it will change the length of a day

THE moon is slowly moving away from Earth, a shocking new study has revealed.

It is currently moving 3.8 cm further from our planet every year – and has been for billions.

The distance between the moon and the earth has increased very slowly

Today the moon is 238,855 miles away, but it was once much closer.

About 2.45 billion years ago it was just under 200,000 miles away.

The moon also has a slowing effect on the earth, meaning that the farther it goes, the longer a day lasts.

So 2.45 billion years ago the day actually had 16.9 hours compared to the 24 hours we have today.

This means that a full day will be even longer, although it will take millions of years before it makes any difference at all.

We’ve actually known for some time that the moon is gradually retreating.

During the 1969 Apollo missions, experts noticed something odd about the reflective plates installed on the lunar surface.

At this point, NASA realized that our nearest neighbor is moving away by 3.8 cm every year.

Scientists have now corroborated this and have reached into the distant past by looking at a canyon in Australia.

They examined ancient rock layers from the Karijini National Park in the west of the country.

“It is quite amazing that the dynamics of past solar systems can be determined from small variations in ancient sedimentary rocks,” continued Professor Joshua Davies and researcher Margriet Lantink The conversation.

“However, one important data point does not give us a full understanding of the evolution of the Earth-Moon system.”

Their results are published in the journal PNAS.
