Music video director Chris Applebaum has claimed Justin Timberlake brutally dumped Britney Spears via text message.

The director worked with 40-year-old Britney to create the video for her single Overprotected and claims the star was left in an extremely callous way by 41-year-old Justin.

Chris and Britney filmed the remixed version of the “Overprotected” music video in March 2002 – that’s when Britney’s high-profile romance with Justin fell apart.

Chris claims he encouraged Britney to process her new agony of abandonment to create a music video that would make Justin seethe with regret.

Taking to Instagram on Friday, the director shared a memory snap from the night Britney was dumped, recalling: “This was taken on the second day of filming for her ‘Overprotected’ video.

“It was a 24-hour (planned) day of shooting and we had a crew clock at 12 hours and a new one.

“Sometime during the second shift, Brit disappeared and I went to her trailer to pick her up … only to find that her boyfriend Justin had just broken up with her over text.”

Chris then says, “My advice to anyone reading this: don’t text break up!”

He continued: “We sat on the floor of their trailer for a minute, talked about it and then rallied.

“I told her to get out there and show Justin that he made the biggest mistake of his life. That was just one of the stories from that shoot…”

Britney and Justin were a couple from early 1999 until the romance ended “abruptly” in 2002 – soon after, allegations of infidelity emerged from the ashes of their romance.

Claims Justin left Britney via text message has sparked backlash against the ex-*NSYNC singer.

Reacting to Chris’ post, one fan wrote: “WOOOOW. She deserves so much better!”

Another wrote: “She is so strong, she deserves so much love.”

A third fan commented: “You were right, Justin made a huge mistake. But thank God she’s better off without him.”

While another wrote: “How cruel to break up with her over a text message” – with Chris himself responding to the comment, adding: “It doesn’t make any sense.”

After her relationship with Justin ended, Britney married her childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander in Las Vegas in January 2004, but the marriage was annulled 55 hours later.

Three months later, she started dating dancer Kevin Federline, and three months later they got engaged — in September of the same year.

The couple welcomed sons Sean and Jayden, who are now 16 and 15 respectively, together but separated in November 2006, sparking a bitter divorce and custody battle.

In 2008, Britney suffered a high-profile meltdown and was placed under a conservatory – with US courts allowing her father to be in control of her personal and financial affairs.

Conservatory ended last year and the star has since become engaged to 28-year-old actor Sam Asghari and they are set to give birth to their first child together later this year.
