In a panel with Vulture called “In Conversations with the Cast Community,” cast members reminisced about the monkey’s introduction to the show. Apparently, the marketing department went to great lengths to bring the monkey into the spotlight of a photo session. Someone involved in “Community” seems to believe this monkey will be the show’s saving grace:
Gillian Jacobs: “At one point, everyone believed the monkey would save our show, and we had to do a photo shoot -–”
Ken Jeong: “With the Monkey! Part 4!”
Jacobs: “They tried to get the monkey into every shot, and at one point, we were all pressed against the office window, and the publisher said, ‘And remember to look down, because they’ll more monkey swing on the doorknob! “and Joel [McHale] gone, ‘No more monkeys!’ And from then on I called the program Co-mon-ity. But yes, that monkey is said to have saved us all. “
While this behind-the-scenes story is hilarious, it also speaks to the larger issue of network interference in a show’s creative process. The members of “Community” are looking back at this moment with both humor and disappointment, seeing the absurdity of trying to use a monkey to scare away viewers.
