The much-requested feature was introduced with the September 12 iOS 16 software update rollout.

When this feature is enabled, the iPhone vibrates slightly when you type a key.

However, in a recent support document, Apple warns that the feature could impact your iPhone’s battery life.

In the document, the company explains what the feature does: “Your iPhone keyboard may make a sound or vibrate when you type.”

Adding a haptic keyboard might not sound like much, but it makes typing smoother and more intuitive.

If you really master it, you can even type without looking at your device.

“Turning on keyboard haptics may impact the battery life of your iPhone,” Apple said.

The new feature is one of several introduced Monday with the release of iOS 16, the latest version of the iPhone operating system.

How to activate the iPhone haptic keyboard

Before you can try the feature, you must first download iOS 16 by going to settings > General > software update.

Haptic keyboard feedback is disabled by default, so you’ll need to turn it on in—you guessed it—your device settings.

  1. Open settings.
  2. Beat sounds & haptics
  3. Under keyboard feedback Switch sound and haptics on.

Now when you press a letter on the Apple keyboard, you’ll hear a clicking sound and a haptic tap.

If you don’t like the sound that much, put your phone on vibrate or silent mode.

You can do this in settings or on newer iPhones by dragging the Alert slider on the left side of your device.
