The new iPhone lock mode that protects you from hackers is like turning your phone into Fort Knox.

LOCKDOWN MODE, Apple’s new cybersecurity tool coming to phones with the launch of iOS16, has been praised by cybersecurity experts.

The new feature, unveiled as part of Wednesday’s iPhone 14 launch, gives users the ability to temporarily turn off some of the device’s most abused features.

With the push of a button, users can launch lockdown mode, making it harder for online crooks to install spyware and steal private phone data.

One cybersecurity expert has even gone so far as to say that lockdown mode is the “heaviest weapon” in Apple’s cybersecurity artillery.

“It’s the type of feature that’s probably a standard issue among Secret Service agents and is now being rolled out to a much wider audience,” said Marijus Briedis, chief technology officer at NordVPN.

“With just a few taps, users can set up the equivalent of Fort Knox on their iPhone and protect the data on their phone from the attention of potential hackers.”

This is because lockdown mode, once activated, restricts the activities allowed on your device, leaving a far smaller target for cybercriminals.

“The growth of powerful government-sponsored spyware like Pegasus was a clear motivation for stricter measures,” said Briedis.

“But Apple’s announcement last month of a vulnerability affecting devices running an earlier version of iOS shows why consumers, too, might be tempted by the new feature.”

However, there is a cost to using lockdown mode, the security pro added.

He said that using this security measure will limit the performance of your iPhone and the things you can do with it.

For one, most message attachments and links are blocked in lockdown mode, and shared photo albums are unavailable. In addition, anonymous FaceTime calls are a thing of the past.

“Furthermore, you can’t just toggle the mode on and off without completely resetting the system.

“Unless you’re a senior government minister or privy to priceless government or business secrets, activating lockdown mode to protect your phone is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.”

It’s definitely worth weighing the risk of lockdown mode, especially since it might make you look like you have something to hide.

“If cybercriminals are targeting your device, running the feature could convince anyone tracking your phone that you have something worth stealing,” Briedis added.
