The new Limerick Greenway shuttle bus can take bikes and buggies on board

A new daily shuttle bus service on the Limerick Greenway means users can now enter or exit the 40km off-road trail at a junction that suits them.

The bus, which has been in operation since July, runs every hour from 12pm to 4pm between Rathkeale, Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale, Co Limerick.

Hotel pickup from locations in between is available upon request before 12:00 PM, and bikes and strollers can be taken on board.

The service costs €10 per adult for a full ride and €5 for a half ride. For children aged 3-16 the price is €5/€2.50. Children under the age of three travel for free.

Shuttle bus service, similar to the pickup and drop-off services that were available on the Waterford and Great Western Greenways, is available seven days a week through September 1st. After that it is operated on weekends.

It is operated by Limerick Greenway Bike Hire and tickets can be bought online at limerickgreenwaybikehire.ie or at Greenway Junctions in Rathkeale, Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale.

“Accessibility is key to encouraging locals and visitors alike to experience the beauty of West Limerick, explore the towns and villages along the way and stop for coffee or some sightseeing,” said Gordon Daly, Limerick Director of Service city and district council.

The Limerick Greenway has welcomed over 500,000 visitors since it reopened last year following a €10 million investment by Limerick City and County Council.

The 40km off-road route currently connects the towns of Rathkeale, Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale along the former Limerick to Tralee railway line.

A connection with the North Kerry Greenway is planned in the near future to create a 50km off-road route from Rathkeale to Listowel.

A number of cycle hire shops now operate along the route and the shuttle bus service will operate “with a view to expanding to Ardagh and Barnagh for the summer of 2023”, the council says.
