The new Sonic 2 movie poster is a tribute to classic Boxart

Whether because of its simple yet iconic style, or because it marked the moment when Sonic the Hedgehog really exploded in popularity, Sonic 2’s original boxart remains in the hearts of the gaming community. to this day, 30 years after its original release.

Clearly aware of this, the upcoming Sonic 2 movie has released yet another poster, this one aimed directly at fans who still have fond memories of the beloved sequel. Voice actor Ben Schwartz, who will reprise the role of Sonic in the upcoming film, shared the new poster on Twitter.

The poster is a clear homage to the original feature film, with Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik grinning at a huge number denoting a sequel. The tagline – “Welcome to the Next Level” – is a reference to the classic Sega Genesis ad campaign from the early 90s.

But while it is very similar to the original boxart, it is also different in a few ways. Sonic and Tails still take center stage, but they’re supporting each other in this release. Instead of a blank background, there is a magical waterfall. Overall, it’s more dynamic, but perhaps not as clean as the original.

Posters have been released ahead of the release of Sonic 2, which will be out next month. Earlier today, Paramount also released the final trailer for the film, which featured Idris Elba’s Knuckles.

Paramount and Sega have big plans for Sonic. In addition to the upcoming film, a Knuckles spin-off series starring Elba is also in the works for Paramount Plus. Sega also has a new game in development.

In the meantime, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled to launch on April 8. In the meantime, check out our Sonic 2 console discussion, which originally premiered during the IGN Fan Fest 2022.
