With the genre-bending narrative featured in “Nope,” Abels cut his work out when it came to creating music. “”No” is my most ambitious score to date,’ Abels said in the announcement. “There are elements from the sci-fi, action, horror and western genres, but always through the color palette for Jordan Peele’s unique vision.”
Our Jack Giroux interviewed Abels about the new track, confirming that the sound includes “a larger orchestra [he’d] used before, “while at the same time including” many pauses in the piece because [in] That vast vast valley, it’s important to hear the sound OJ heard when he first understood that there might be something out there. “
The most intriguing aspect of the release, however, is the artwork chosen for the record jacket designed by a teenager. Artist Ethan Mesa hand-selected by Jordan Peele to design the artwork. Mesa posted some fanart on social media in February when the trailer dropped, and it popped into the sights of Peele, who loved it so much that he suggested to buy it. A few months later, Peele and Waxwork made him an offer to design a record, inviting him and his guardian to see the film before anyone else, and the rest is history.
“Nope” soundtrack is now available to pre-order with an expected delivery date around December 2022, pending unexpected supply chain delays or production changes.
