No points: Armstrong impressed by the record-breaking round

The contestants have opened up about what will happen when they appear on the show – including the surprising revelation that they are prohibited from wearing certain types of clothing.

Hosted by Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman and launched in 2009, the BBC trivia competition has become a much-loved show as contestants battle to find the most baffling answers.

Starting with four two-person teams, pairs compete in a round-robin of general knowledge questions until one team remains.

To win the cash pot, the pair that made it to the finals had to get a nonsensical answer.

Talking about what it was like to be on the show, Bethan Thomas said Sun that she was surprised by the rules that determined what she could and couldn’t win.

Bethan, 31, who appeared on the show in 2016, said: “I wear pretty much all black or sequins and they say, ‘No, you can’t wear that, can’t wear points’.

“So I went looking for some flowers and so did my friend. When we were in, someone told us we looked like Kew Gardens.”

She also explained how they got their “TV makeover”, which means she “has very thick contours”.

Filming also took much longer than she initially thought, and they were there “all day”.

Before appearing on TV, the hopefuls needed to take part in group interviews, and Bethan explained that they had been invited to try out for the show.

“They made us play games – it felt like I was doing a comedy, like they were trying to make us funny and I felt really pressured,” she said. “You can see a lot of people really trying to break a few jokes and pull a few faces to get started. “

Speaking of hosts Richard and Alexander backstage, she said: “They come and talk to you, say a little bit of the opening and make you feel comfortable.

“Richard said he has family in Brighton, so I told him about it. They were really nice. Actually, I’m a bit confused too. “
