The number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients rose again to 1,081, the highest since February last year.
The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care has also reached 44, up from 42 yesterday.
Meanwhile, the positive rate of those who do PCR test today is also as high as 43.95pc with 7,131 new cases.
The figures show an upward trend in the number of infections and hospital admissions of patients with Covid-19.
About half of the Covid-19 patients in the hospital tested positive after being hospitalized for another illness.
The high number of Covid-19 patients is causing ongoing disruption to hospital services due to the need for infection control and hospital bed closures.
It comes as hospitals are preparing for a large number of hospital emergencies in the coming days as the country celebrates St. Patrick’s Day.
HSE has urged people with mild illness not to go to emergency departments but to seek medical help elsewhere.
Mater Hospital in Dublin said today it is urging the public to avoid the emergency department if possible.
. Hospital services are under tremendous pressure due to a combination of the large number of people contracting Covid, the large number of doctors present in the emergency department, and the absence of staff due to Covid-19.
“Patients who are showing up in our emergency department with a non-urgent condition unfortunately have to wait a long time to be seen.
“If possible, Mater advises the patient
non-emergency conditions to seek support from other parts of health
services such as their minor trauma unit or GP.
“However, any patient
would of course be seen in urgent need of hospital care and Mater would urge such patients not to delay and seek such care. “
