The owner of seven houses says he will keep the energy discount

A seven-home owner set to receive £2,800 from Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s energy premium has said he will keep the money.

Craig, an owner of seven holiday homes, admitted he will keep the money, which will go to every household in the UK to help Britons save £400 off their energy bills.

The energy rebate is set to help address the cost-of-living crisis after the government introduced a temporary 25 percent windfall tax on oil and gas companies to fund the money.

The Chancellor also gave a one-off living allowance of £650 to the most vulnerable in society.

However, second home owners are eligible for the £400 energy rebate, meaning several homeowners will also get the money – which is earmarked for the most vulnerable.

And an owner of seven vacation homes has openly admitted that he will keep the money.

Speaking of Camilia Tominey LBC Show, Craig said: “I think I’ll keep the money because I personally feel the government has mismanaged our energy in the UK for many years.

“Like everyone else, my energy bills are through the roof. What I charge my guests does not increase. It doesn’t reflect what they pay, so basically we’re all affected. We all pay more.

“Basically, if the government had actually planned ahead 20 years ago, we wouldn’t be in this crisis.”

After the government reversed the temporary windfall tax after initially voting against it, millions of households across the country will receive help to cover their energy bills.

However, there has been criticism of second home owners taking the money as it is intended for people struggling with the current cost of living crisis.

He was asked by Camilla: “What about people who say, Craig, this money isn’t for you? you are not?”

He said: “We’re fine now but it’s been tough for the last two years. It hit everyone, it hit every company.

“I think a lot of companies are trying to recoup a lot of losses that they’ve suffered over the last few years.”
