Rust cameraman Halyna Hutchins’ parents are stranded in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, which is currently under attack by the Russian military, her husband Matt said.
Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine is now entering its fourth week as the number of civilian casualties in the eastern European country continues to rise.
In a tweet from his personal account, Matt Hutchins said Ukrainian-born Halyna’s parents, Olga and Anatoly Androsovych, stayed in Kyiv to “prepare for the worst.”
He also said that Olga continues to work at the hospital, where she has been a nurse for over three decades, “because her country needs her” and also “because they can’t escape,” NPR reported.
Halyna’s sister Svetlana has safely fled to Romania with their three-year-old daughter and will “travel on to Western Europe,” Hutchins added.
Halyna was born in Zhytomyr, Ukraine in 1979 and grew up “surrounded by reindeer and nuclear submarines” on the Soviet base.
The Indo Daily – It’s Complicated: Alec Baldwin, his acting career and the fatal shooting on the movie set
She has a degree in international journalism from Kyiv National University and worked on British documentary film productions in Europe before graduating from the American Film Institute Conservatory in Los Angeles in 2015.
She reportedly retained her Ukrainian citizenship after moving to the United States.
While his tweets are protected, his Twitter bio reads, “Stop the war in Ukraine.”
Calling for a no-fly zone over Ukraine, Hutchins tweeted: “China must step up and do what NATO cannot. A Chinese intervention that guarantees both sides stay out of the sky and not use rocket fire from ground forces would boost China’s global standing and save face for Vladimir Putin.”
Halyna died on the set of the film in October last year after being struck by a live bullet fired from actor Alec Baldwin’s prop gun. Director Joel D’Souza was also injured in the shooting.
Hutchins is now suing the 30-rock actor over Halyna’s “senseless and tragic death.” Baldwin has since denied any liability for the tragedy and has accused Halyna’s family of trying to extract money from him.
Halyna is survived by her husband and their nine-year-old son Andros.
