The Philadelphia Inquirer investigates the accused, Senator Bob Menendez

“The cloud hanging over the Garden State’s senior senator will inevitably impact his ability to put his constituents first,” the board warned. “He should step back and focus his energy on building a credible defense.”

The evidence against Menendez was “damning,” it continued, saying New Jersey voters “deserve better than a twice-impeached senator.” In a 2017 trial involving other allegations, the jury was unable to reach a verdict.

“Wake up Bob, you’re toast,” the Post’s demand said.

Menendez has resigned as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee but has vowed to remain in the Senate and contest the allegations. He appeared in court on Wednesday morning.
