When it comes to mail, we get a lot of unsolicited mail, from bills we’d rather not have to deal with, to menus and other spam.
But if you look closely at some of the letters you received, you might notice handwriting on the front or back that you didn’t expect.
A Reddit user recently visited the online forum Casual UK thread asking for help in deciphering what these symbols really mean.
They shared a photo of an envelope with the letter “P” on the front and a circle.

Her post read, “Can anyone tell me why there has been a ‘P’ symbol written on all my letters for the past few days?”
Hundreds of people replied to the post to let the user know that it wasn’t about anything sinister.
In fact, it was just an easy way for their postman to be super organized when delivering mail, since the “P” stands for package.
So it is to indicate that when your letter is delivered they also have a package for you.
One person replied: “It means package. Either for yourself or the next delivery. It is a reminder for the postman/woman.”
Another, who works as a postman, shared: “You had a package/parcel.
A third offered a slightly more detailed explanation, writing: “This is a way for the postman to remember that when he posts your letter there’s a package for you too. You forgot to knock and give you your package.
“Or sometimes they’ll put P10 or something on the previous letter – that lets them know they have a package next door (number 10) but no letter.”
So there you have it folks! Secret revealed.
