Halo, the TV adaptation of the popular Microsoft franchise, set a record for Paramount+ by becoming the most watched premiere for the streaming service.
The show’s premiere knocked out 1883 from the top spot, which isn’t a huge feat considering the series is a prequel to the fairly popular Yellowstone show. Both shows were heavily marketed, and while 1883 had an association with Yellowstone, the Halo campaign served a dual purpose for both a games fanbase that has grown to more than 20 and those who enjoy sci-fi shows .
Add that Paramount has partnered with the networks MTV, CBS, Comedy Central, BET and Paramount Network to draw in the target audiences, and it didn’t hurt that the ad campaign began with a Halo trailer that opened during the AFC championship game , where 48 million people saw the trailer that day.
As for viewership, Deadline didn’t provide numbers for Halo, but Paramount+’s 1883 debut brought in 4.9 million viewers after it premiered behind Yellowstone, so we know the numbers are larger than 1883’s When Nielsen’s streaming rankings are fully known for the coming week, a better idea of how well Halo was doing will be known.
Halo premiered on March 24 and was originally in development for Showtime in partnership with Xbox Entertainment Studios. Announced during Microsoft’s Xbox One reveal in May 2013, Halo: The Television Series was developed for both the cable channel and the company’s Xbox One console. Production on the show finally began in 2019. The series, which was renewed for a second season, is produced by Showtime, 343 Industries and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television in association with One Big Picture and Chapter Eleven.
