The President of the European Parliament pays tribute to Veronica Guerin at the memorial

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, laid a wreath at the memorial to journalist Veronica Guerin in Dublin Castle.
The Maltese MEP has been vocal against violence against women during her tenure as President of the European Parliament.
In November, Ms Metsola addressed MPs after Bernice Cassar, a 40-year-old mother of two, was shot through the windscreen of her car and killed in Malta.
“She is one of many examples of abuse and murder of women in Europe just because they are women,” Ms Metsola said.
“Stop killing women. No more excuses. protect women. We must act now.”
Ms Guerin was shot dead in June 1996 when her car was stopped at traffic lights outside Dublin. She was 37 years old.
Ms Metsola spoke with Ms Guerin’s brother Jimmy and his wife Louann at the memorial on Friday morning. Irish MEP Grace O’Sullivan also attended.
Mr Guerin spoke about the memorial at Dublin Castle, a DCU grant on her behalf and how journalism students had visited the memorial over the years.
He told Ms Metsola he found out his sister had been shot when a friend called him.
The memorial to Ms. Guerin has the inscription “Do not be afraid”.
