The Press Council honors student journalists for news articles on sustainability and housing shortages

Articles on sustainable development and the housing benefit system have garnered journalism students top prizes in this year’s Press Council of Ireland student grants.

The event returned this year after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The winners of the 2022 bursaries received their awards from Press Council Chairman Rory Montgomery at a ceremony at Dublin’s Buswells Hotel yesterday.

The prize for first place, worth EUR 1,000, went to Laura Klepeisz, who is studying journalism for her master’s degree at Dublin City University (DCU). She submitted what has been described as the “most impressive” set of four articles on sustainable development.

The outside independent reviewer for the grants is Michael Denieffe, the former Editor-in-Chief of Independent News & Media.

He said Ms Klepeisz’s articles were a “tour de force” and “engrossing articles on the world’s greatest crisis”.

This year’s runner-up was Julianne Doyle, who is studying for a Higher National Diploma in Journalism at Coláiste Dhúlaigh in Coolock, North Dublin.

She submitted articles and a podcast about the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) program.

Mr. Denieffe described her journalism as “amazing, very good and a challenging insight into the real estate crisis”.

Ms. Doyle received €500 in prize money.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mr. Montgomery said: “The Press Council is pleased to resume annual undergraduate scholarship awards.

“Growing young talent into the journalism profession is vital and the Press Council is committed to working with media students through the scholarship scheme and through presentations for media students at the nine colleges in Ireland that offer media studies courses.

“Each year we present these awards, we are encouraged by the high standards of the students and the dedication of their faculty.” The Press Council honors student journalists for news articles on sustainability and housing shortages
