People in Ireland have been warned about the heightened fly threat this summer.

Lies are traditionally a pest in warm weather, so they multiply and spread during the summer months when the weather improves and temperatures rise.

In the period from January to July 2022, the pest control provider Rentokil saw a 16 percent increase in operations compared to the same period last year.

The top five boroughs responsible for fly infestations in the January-July 2022 period include Cork with 18 per cent of callouts, Kerry with 15 per cent, Sligo with 14 per cent, Galway with 11 per cent and Mayo with 9 per cent.

Flies pose a risk of transmitting bacteria such as E-Coli and Campylobacter to humans when they come into contact with food.

Rentokil encouraged people to take a number of measures to prevent the presence of flies in their homes.

These tips include fixing leaky faucets and clogged drains where water can pool, covering groceries, keeping trash cans, sinks and eating areas clean, installing window screens, closing windows and doors at night and the installation of a fly killer.

The advanced technical field consultant at Rentokil said it’s important for people to be aware of the increased fly activity at this time of year.

Richard Faulkner said: “Flies can pose a risk of contaminating food or spreading, so it is important to ensure that all food on your premises is covered and stored correctly and not left outside.”

“In addition, these insects can be a nuisance when found in swarms, as their collected excrement can cause a stench and stain fabrics and walls. In addition, their presence can pose a risk of violation of food or hygiene regulations for companies.

“In terms of protection from these pests, the most effective methods are installing fly screens on doors and windows and using an LED fly killer unit, such as a LED fly killer. B. the Lumnia LED fly killer.”

If home or business owners suspect they have a fly infestation, they should first identify the source of the infestation.

Rentokil recommends checking areas such as doors, windows, outlets, eaves, pipes, cord openings and vents to determine if your property has a fly problem.

Keeping bird feeders clean and removing bird seed before nightfall can also help limit the number of flies and remove clutter from the home and yard.
