The Quarry features a “Death Rewind” mechanic that allows you to undo your fatal mistakes

The Quarry Director Will Byles recently explained how the upcoming slasher-inspired horror game’s Death Rewind mechanic will work.

If you play one Supermassive games game, you can probably expect one (usually more) of the characters to die in your playthrough. The Quarry isn’t meant to be any different, but speaking to SegmentNext last week (April 28), Byles explained a new mechanic that will be available in-game once players have beaten the game, which will allow them to earn a select number of to undo deaths.

“Death Rewind is a repeat mechanic that unlocks after you complete the story or when you purchase the Deluxe Edition of the game,” Byles explains. “Essentially, you are granted three ‘lives’, allowing you to avoid the death of a character at the cost of using one of the lives. You are brought back to the moment you made an important decision that resulted in the character’s death. You can make a different choice.”

While it’s a little debatable whether any mechanic would be useful on a first playthrough, Byles also stated that The Quarry takes around 10 hours to playthrough, depending on the player. “The game is also designed to be highly replayable as we believe many will want to take different paths and make different choices for a very long time!”

Byles also recently spoke about the in-game branching narratives, saying there will be 186 different endings for players to experience, which really underscores this whole replayability thing.

First revealed in March, The Quarry is separate from Supermassive Games’ Dark Pictures Anthology. It’s something of a spiritual sequel to Until Dawn and has a somewhat star cast, with actors like David Arquette (Scream), Justice Smith (Jurassic World) and Brenda Song (Dollface).
