One of the Queen’s most trusted staffers couldn’t be better placed to play a light-hearted April Fool’s joke – and let the couple down.

Angela Kelly has held the prestigious role of Queen’s Dresser since 2002 and has worked for the Royal Family for more than 25 years.

Angela published a book called The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe, which contained a hilarious anecdote about an April Fool’s joke that the dresser pulled in 2006, MyLondon reports.

She seized her opportunity for some mischief as April Fool’s Day approached while she was in Australia on a royal tour.

As the Queen was excited to see the legendary kookaburra bird, Kelly bought a stuffed kookaburra and placed it in a birdcage on the balcony outside the royal suite at the Governor’s House.

The queen caught a glimpse of the exotic bird and Kelly recalled the queen looking outside and exclaiming, “It’s a kookaburra!”

Angela said, “I was going to open the cage and she said loudly, ‘No! Do not do that! It will fly away!’

“I turned to Her Majesty, trying to keep a straight face, and solemnly told her it was dead.

“She looked horrified when I walked towards her with my arms outstretched and when she took the bird from my hands she realized I had teased her.”

However, the Queen was prepared with a retort of her own that apparently left the dresser in fits of laughter.

Kelly added, “‘April Fool’s Day!’ I said with a mischievous grin and she only had two words for me: ‘You’re fired!’

“I laughed uncontrollably when Her Majesty turned to His Royal Highness and said, ‘Do you know what she just did to me? Angela had me!’”

Angela, who is originally from Liverpool, described her boss’ joke in the report.

She said: “We have a lot of fun together… The Queen has a funky sense of humor and is a great mimic… She can do all accents – including mine.”
