The Queen’s funeral music contains echoes of happier times

The track played at the Queen’s state funeral recalls happier moments in her marriage to the Duke of Edinburgh and her coronation.

any of these pieces were chosen for their special significance to both the Queen and Westminster Abbey, where thousands of mourners gathered for the funeral.

Among the hymns is The Lord My Shepherd, sung at the Queen’s wedding to Philip at the convent in 1947.

The song O Taste and See was written by Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose ashes are also buried in the church, for the Queen’s coronation in the convent in 1953.

Another hymn at the ceremony had a connection to the royal family: Love Divine, All Loves Exceeding was sung in a staging that was first heard for the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 2011.

The Queen’s Piper helped end the funeral with a performance of the classic Sleep, Dearie, Sleep.

Pipe Major Paul Burns, the monarch’s personal player at the time of her death, performed when the service ended, before the coffin left Westminster Abbey for Windsor.

Major Burns of the Royal Regiment of Scotland is the 17th holder of the post, established in 1843 during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Prior to serving, Matthew Jorysz, the monastery’s assistant organist, played a series of pieces including Sir Edward Elgar’s Elegy Op 58, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ Beliequi Domum Meum, and Malcolm Williamson’s Fantasy On O Paradise.
