The Queen’s hilarious reaction to being called ‘Mama’

Prince Charles delighted royal well-wishers when he called the Queen “Mama” during a moving speech at a star-studded concert celebrating the platinum anniversary.

The heir to the throne joined the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and the Tindalls to watch the BBC party at the palace.

Concluding the evening’s entertainment, which included performances by Sir Elton John, Diana Ross, Sir Rod Stewart, Alicia Keys and Duran Duran, he thanked the monarch for 70 years of service.

He said, “Your Majesty, Mommy. You were with us in our difficult times. And you bring us together to celebrate moments of pride, joy and happiness. They met us and talked to us. You laugh and cry with us and above all you have been there for us for 70 years.”

It’s far from the first time Charles has used the affectionate term for his mother in public, including at the Diamond Jubilee concert.

But perhaps the most iconic occasion was when he called her “Mummy” during her 92nd birthday celebrations at the Royal Albert Hall in 2018 – and it was all down to her reaction.

He began his speech again by saying, “Your Majesty, Mommy,” to great cheers and applause from the crowd.

The Queen, standing next to him on stage, dressed in a stunning yellow outfit with a pearl necklace, could be seen rolling her eyes at the ceiling before breaking out in a smile.

The monarch was joined by other members of her family including Prince William, Sophie Wessex and Princess Beatrice for the event – and they were all spotted laughing too.

Prince Philip also paid tribute to his father, Prince Philip, during his platinum anniversary speech.

He said: “You promised to serve all your life – you continue to deliver. That’s why we’re here. We’re celebrating tonight.

“The scale of the celebrations this evening – and the radiance of warmth and affection throughout this anniversary weekend – is our way of saying thank you – from your family, the country, the Commonwealth, in fact the whole world.

“On behalf of all of us, I would like to pay my own tribute to your lifetime of selfless service.

“Her family now spans four generations. You are our head of state. And you are our mother too.”

The Duke of Cambridge also took the stage and welcomed the platinum anniversary concert with “optimism and joy” while praising the Queen for her “hope” for the future of the planet.

He received a loud cheer from the crowd when he mentioned that the Queen was almost 100 years old and how she had experienced major technological changes during her lifetime.

During the evening, the Queen delighted fans with a surprise comedy skit with Paddington Bear, in which she revealed she shared his love of jam sandwiches.

After enjoying a somewhat disastrous afternoon tea, the beloved bear offered the monarch a sandwich, but she said she always keeps an emergency supply in her signature handbag.

The head of state and her furry guest introduced opening act Queen by banging their song We Will Rock You on china mugs.
