On this week’s episode of Real Health, we talk about the negative impact a sedentary lifestyle can have on our health.
With remote work now becoming a huge part of our lives, it means the way we get around has completely changed. Less running to the bus, shorter distances to make tea or coffee, even the toilet is not as far away as in the office.
All of this means that we can get into the habit of sitting more. But could small changes in our daily lives help us improve our health and well-being?
I am joined by Suzy Reading, a psychologist and qualified yoga teacher and personal trainer specializing in well-being.
Her new book, Sit to get Fit, gives readers a practical guide to changing how we sit for health, energy, and longevity.
Suzy says that while sitting can be unhealthy for our physical health, it can also cause problems for our mental health: “Interestingly, research has shown that our posture has an impact on our mood, particularly the rounded posture we end up in that Sofa. Especially if you pair that with a screen. Research shows that this rounded spine, downward gaze position lowers your mood and lowers your subjective energy levels.”
We’ll also talk about some simple and quick movements you can incorporate into your day that might reverse some of the damage done by prolonged sitting.
