The Real Health Podcast: The Supplement Episode with Kathryn Stewart

The realm of dietary supplements can be confusing

You need to consider which vitamins to take, what form they should be in, and whether they’re worth the money.

On this week’s episode of Real Health, I walk you through everything you need to know about supplements with dietician and sports nutritionist Kathryn Stewart.

Kathryn says you only have to look at the name to know what supplements are supposed to do.

“You should not use them as a substitute or replacement. You are always in addition to what you are already eating.

“You want to think, can I get that from a certain food [and] Am I getting enough of the food? If that’s a no, and something’s low before then, maybe you need supplements,” she says.

We also talk about some of the supplements that people should be taking all the time.

Many of us have heard the advice of experts on vitamin D, but Kathryn agrees that omega fatty acids are something people should consider.

“When people eat fish, it’s usually the less offensive ones or the less smelly ones…but salmon, trout, mackerel sardines, the oily fish, they’re the ones you get the omegas from.”

Because omega fatty acids are critical to brain and heart health, Kathryn recommends getting two servings of these fishes per week, and if you can’t, consider supplementing.
