One of the things that “The Rings of Power” is doing so well is setting up a series of mysteries in a world we already feel like we already know. Who is that mysterious man falling out of the sky? Ask one and they’re sure it’s Gandalf. Asked others and they confirmed it was really Sauron. While all these puzzling questions are raised, we are allowed to return to Middle-earth in a whole new era that, as the marketing I disliked promised, is both familiar and different.
The sequel could push the distance even further as production is moving entirely to the UK while the first was filmed in New Zealand, the world’s real-life Middle-earth is also the setting. for Peter Jackson’s two Tolkien films. The UK is the author’s starting point for “The Lord of the Rings” so it may be more accurate than originally intended, but New Zealand has always been and will be the place many people will think of. is Middle Earth.
But time will tell how the new location will appear on the screen. What really matters is that the text and characters continue to be top notch. As of this writing, the final episode is one of the best hours of fantasy television ever coming out with an explosive ending that sets the stage for some really interesting, insightful stuff to come.
