The Rings Of Power VFX Producer Talks about CG Horses, Orcs, and Explosive Sequences from the latest episode [Exclusive Interview]

So there’s a lot of fight scenes in the latest episode, I think the biggest fight scenes we’ve seen so far on the show. How do you approach creating a fight scene like the one we saw in the beginning with the Orcs attacking the stronghold in the Southlands, and deciding where and how to use VFX?

In this particular case, everything was completely planned, led by [director Charlotte Brändström] and our second unit director, Vic Armstrong, who I love – he’s the most famous stuntman in the world. He’s Indiana Jones. [Editor’s note: Vic Armstrong is, indeed, Indiana Jones — he was Harrison Ford’s stunt double for the films.]

Vic is really just this classic British filmmaker and a pleasure to be with. That sequence is a classic British horse battle. We break it down to the beat, and we did that using super modern techniques from virtual production – we’re using virtual cameras with game engine technology for the layout and the scenes. for it. And we also took the classic methods and showed it with the camera and through the beat with the stuntmen.

The way we define the use of VFX isn’t what you think – it’s not the most dangerous thing you can do in visual effects. So when a man falls or a horse lays down or gets up or a leash encounters a herd of orcs, it’s all real. It’s extra stuff, things in front, more horses, more people, more orcs so we make it denser.

So we’re adding things to be on the safe side. For example, you have a horse that jumps over a crowd of Orcs, the horse will perform its jump with Orcs represented by dummies and the like. Then we’ll film it again with a computerized camera that will precisely take the movements of the people on the ground, stitch them together, safely make it real.

In this particular case, the CG horse, the additional CG Orc, and the Númenóreans, all of which have been added, but all from the real thing. So the horses we scanned and made into CG horses of the real horses that were on set. The way I describe it is manual, beat by beat.
