The worst decline in living standards since the 1950s is turning the cost of living crisis into an absolute disaster for most people and businesses in Britain.

As Boris Johnson and the Conservative government raise taxes and prices while cutting wages and Social Security payments, opposition to the Tories will grow.

Stagnation – high inflation in a recession – is a serious threat, compounded by the ruthless Johnson jeopardizing a trade war with the European Union by undoing Brexit by tearing up the rules over Northern Ireland.

Ahead of the TUC’s mass march in London on Saturday to demand better, the Daily Mirror will report this week from communities where people deserve better.

Workers and families should not pay a high price for Conservative incompetence.

Flight of the imagination

Branded ‘appalling’ by the Prince of Wales, deportations to Rwanda are meant to ignite political anger – not solve the Channel crossing problem.

Today’s flight, if it goes ahead, will only carry a handful of passengers, further evidence that the £120million deal with the African country is unlikely to affect the numbers.

The Home Office expects only a few hundred to be sent there this year.

Nevertheless, almost 30,000 refugees and migrants risk the dangerous Channel crossing.

Stopping shipping and giving a legal route to the seven out of ten people found to have legitimate claims to reside in Britain is the answer, not shameful dumping in Rwanda.

As the next two heirs to the throne believe there is no way back into public life for the disgraced Prince Andrew, it looks like the Duke of York will remain in the shadows.

With brother Charles and nephew William uniting against a man who paid £12million to keep a sex case out of court, the pariah prince should accept his banishment in the interests of the royal family.
