The Royal College of Music is ranked number one in the world for performing arts

The Royal College of Music (RCM) has been ranked as the world’s leading performing arts institution, according to new global rankings.

he London Conservatory, founded in 1883, was ranked number one by subject in the 2022 QS World University Rankings.

This is the first time it has taken the top spot, overtaking the Juilliard School in New York, which has held that position since 2016, when this categorization was first introduced.

In the last six years, the London College has been ranked at the top in the UK and four of them in Europe.

The RCM was established under a royal charter, with the Prince of Wales currently serving as President of the Conservatory.

Notable alumni of the institution include classical composers Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, as well as musical theater star Alfie Boe and theater director Lord (Andrew) Lloyd-Webber.

The Director of the Royal College of Music, Professor Colin Lawson, said: “I am enormously proud of the entire RCM community.

“Being ranked as the world’s leading institution for the performing arts reflects the dedicated work of the faculty, professors and professional services staff, all of whom work tirelessly to ensure that RCM students have the best possible opportunities in an environment that greatly encourages it reflects the professional world.

The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna took second place in the global ranking, the Juilliard School third and the Conservatoire de Paris fourth.

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) was the second highest ranking British institution and ranked fifth in the world.

The aim of the QS ranking is to measure “the strength and quality of teaching, the quality and output of research work, the employability and the international profile of the RCM”.

Rankings are compiled from the opinions of academics and employers, as well as from analysis of research results and impact.
