The portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has caused quite a stir – it’s a more Marmite painting.

Some have said it looks just like the couple, while others remain a little more skeptical.

Art critic AN Wilson said it failed to capture Kate’s magic Daily Mail.

He called the painting “dead as the dodo” and said in the commission that Kate looked like a “strangely boring doll”.

He added: “The real Duchess of Cambridge cheers everyone up with her bright smile.

“But the character in this painting is wistful, slightly stubborn, and not really recognizable as Our Kate. It also gave her body a rather odd shape in the shiny green dress.”

Rachel Campbell-Johnston wrote The times : “Here is a boastful portrait for the modern monarchy. They must not look too flashy. You must not dress too extravagantly. Nor can they, like the daring princes in Van Dyck’s portraits of royal predecessors, scoff at their viewers with a sneer of arrogant privilege.

“Instead they must stand obediently, in dark suits and garish satin, stiff as the pillars, which, picked out from a featureless background, serve both a stylistic (they weaken the characters) and a symbolic (they are pillars of society) purpose.

“The pair pose like mannequins made to advertise a modern day monarchy.

That of the telegraph Art critic Alastair Sooke was a little kinder, saying there are “flashes of charm, but this Instagram-age portrait is too safe.

“Who did you notice? Someone – perhaps their four-year-old Prince Louis, who so memorably fidgeted during the platinum jubilee – is making the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge smile.

“With this charming trick, British artist Jamie Coreth brings a lively note of informality to an image that might otherwise have been so stiff. Prince William blinks benevolently, Catherine seems almost mocking.

The art critic then suggested that the portrait bore a resemblance to an Instagram-filtered photo, and also quipped that if William chooses to paint a different portrait in the future, he shouldn’t play it safe.
