The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton is suspending some operations

A HOSPITAL has stopped operating in a surgical field after a random check by health surveillance.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has asked the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton to halt planned upper gastrointestinal (upper GI) cancer surgery after an unannounced inspection on August 11.

Those awaiting on-duty surgery will be transferred to other hospitals.

Deanna Westwood, director of the CQC network, said if the “urgent” measures had not been taken, patients could have been put at “risk of unnecessary harm”.

“Following an inspection on Thursday 11th August, CQC has today taken urgent action to suspend the operations of the Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery Service at the Royal Sussex County Hospital site, which is part of the University of Sussex NHS Foundation Trust “, she said.

“We took this action because we believe patients using the service would otherwise be at risk of unnecessary harm.

“The University of Sussex NHS Foundation Trust has the right to appeal and further information will be released by CQC as soon as we are able to do so.”

A spokesman for University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT) said no other surgeries or sites were involved in the suspension and that the number of patients affected was small, with around 30 patients from across the Sussex region having undergone such an operation received per year in the hospital.

He added that the Trust has been in touch with all patients directly affected and will continue to be in touch with them.

dr University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust chief executive officer George Findlay said the trust was “committed” to working with the CQC to make the improvements needed.

“Everything we do is focused on providing patients with the highest standards of care, and we are committed to working with the CQC to take any action necessary to make the improvements needed,” he said.

“This is affecting a small number of patients, but getting it right is a priority for us and we are speaking to those affected to support them and agree alternative arrangements.”
