The recipient must then “open” the gift by touching it before reading the text inside, TiKToker @textinglumberjack showed their followers in a video uploaded last year.

It’s a fun way to end a congratulatory text sent to a Facebook friend on their birthday, anniversary, or other important milestone.

To enable this feature, open the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone or Android device.

Tap your selected recipient, then type in the text box at the bottom of the screen to start typing your message.

Make sure you enter your message first, or the option to convert it to gift won’t appear on the app.

When your text is ready, tap the sticker icon next to the submit button.

Click Effect and select the pink current option on your screen. As soon as you touch it, your message will automatically send.

When the recipient touches the gift, the lid will pop open and they can see your message.

Elsewhere in the Effects tab, you can add fire, love hearts, and other visual decorations to your messages to make them a little more visually interesting.

The feature launched in the US last year and isn’t available in all regions yet.

If you don’t have access to them, don’t worry – there are other text effects available to you…

If you use an iPhone, you can add some cool visual effects to texts sent via iMessage using a series of hidden code word – includes a laser light show.

The feature has been on the iPhone for a while, but often goes viral whenever fans highlight the trick on platforms like TikTok.

Along with the laser effect, you can also make balloons float from the bottom of your partner’s screen on their birthday.

When January arrives, fireworks will explode in response to the message if you wish someone a “happy new year”.

To send someone a funny animation, simply enter one of the code words below into iMessage.

The recipient must have an iPhone for the effect to show.

If you don’t want to use the codeword, you can always long-press the blue send button after typing your message.

This will show you a list of effects that you can add to any notification of your choice. We have compiled a list of code words and their effects below.

  • ‘Pew pew’ – laser light show
  • ‘Happy Birthday’ – bubble
