The star-studded Neighbors finale will be broadcast in Australia

A crowd of devoted fans braved the wet winter weather in Melbourne to watch the outdoor star-studded finale of Australian TV series Neighbors, which ran for 37 years.

Ylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce are among the celebrities who returned to the fictional Ramsay Street to appear in the farewell to the Melbourne-based drama that helped them launch their acting and music careers.

The program was once a big hit in Australia and a bigger hit in the UK, but has fallen victim to ratings declines.

Fan Riya Patel arrived on a big screen in Melbourne’s Federation Square two hours before the start of the 7.30pm local time broadcast to secure a front row bean bag despite passing showers and a bracing 9C temperature.

More than 100 fans attended, many wrapped in blankets.

Ms Patel started watching Neighbors after moving to Melbourne from India in 2018 and had been streaming episodes since then until 2012. She said she would miss the neighbors’ late-night adventures on Ramsay Street.

“I definitely don’t know what I’m going to do at 6:30 p.m. Getting in front of the TV will just be an automatic thing,” Ms Patel said.

The show announced its cancellation in March following the loss of its main UK broadcast partner, Channel 5.

Channel 5 will air the final episode in the UK on Friday.
