The Sussex hospice works with the LGBTQ+ charity for trans education

A HOSPICE has partnered with an LGBTQ+ youth organization to offer staff training in serving the transgender and non-binary community.

The Brighton-based Allsorts Youth Project will provide training for Martlets staff who care for people with terminal illnesses on critical issues and challenges faced by trans people.

The training is part of a work program being implemented by the hospice to ensure its services are inclusive of all.

Clare Irving, Chief Executive of Martlets, said: “Everyone who is reaching the end of their life deserves to have equal access to care and to be treated with dignity and respect.

“My team and I recognize the additional responsibility we have to understand what people from difficult communities may need from us, and that includes our LGBTQ+ neighbors.

“We aim to be a welcoming and inclusive place and are proud of where we’ve come from.

“However, we know we can do better and we’re excited to partner with the Allsorts Youth Project.”

The training follows Hospice UK’s national work to explore the experiences of trans and intersex people. The Being Ready project aims to engage trans and intersex people in end-of-life, palliative care, death, funeral, memorial and bereavement services in England and Wales.

Allsorts Youth Project Executive Director Katie Vincent said: “Now it’s more important than ever that we work together with the wider community to fight LGBTQ phobia and create safer spaces for all LGBTQ+ people in our communities.

“Awareness and inclusion training is a key pillar of our three-pronged approach to supporting LGBTQ+ youth and their families across Sussex and we are proud to be working with Martlets towards this common goal.” The Sussex hospice works with the LGBTQ+ charity for trans education
