The Swedish House Mafia sells master recordings and publisher’s catalogs to Pophouse

In February we have told you that Pophouse, the Swedish entertainment company lead by former universal music Sweden boss Per Sundin planned to invest in music rights.

Today (March 29) the company announced its entry into the rights acquisition by acquiring outright the master recordings and release catalogs of electronic music stars Swedish House Mafia (including their author interests).

The agreement also includes the full acquisition of the masters and publication of Axwell^Ingrosso for an undisclosed sum.

Additionally, Pophouse says it will form what it describes as “the first of its kind” joint venture with members of the group to develop and expand the Swedish House Mafia brand worldwide.

Alongside today’s acquisition news, Pophouse also announced it is expanding the company’s sights beyond Sweden into the US and UK markets, and appointed a music industry veteran and former Capitol music group Chairman and CEO Steve Barnett to its Investment Advisory Committee.

According to a media statement, Barnett “has been tasked with leading the company’s targeted engagement with US and UK-based rightsholders to invest in and collectively build on the legacy of iconic entertainment brands.”

Barnett’s appointment at Pophouse comes shortly after him announced his retirement (December 31, 2020) after a 50-year career in the music business, including eight years at the helm of CMG.

Pophouse was founded as a venture in 2014 by ABBA member Björn Ulvaeus and EQT founder and Chair of the EQT Board of Directors Conni Jonsson, when the company was establishing the world-famous ABBA Museum in Stockholm.

The company has since expanded into numerous other ventures in Stockholm, Sweden, including: space, claims to be the largest gambling center in the world; Pippi in the Circus, a musical based on the Astrid Lindgren character Pippi Longstocking and set in the company’s circus arena; and Nordic podcast house Perfect Day Media.

Pophouse is also the main investor behind ABBA trip Project in a purpose built arena in London that will host all year round ABBA journey Concert starting in May this year, with avatars of the group accompanied by a 10-piece live band.

Swedish House Mafia attract nearly 19 million listeners every month Spotifyand have accumulated billions of combined streams and views.

The group will release their first studio album, paradise again, on April 15 to Records of the Republic. They recently had a hit with to sacrifice on the new album by The Weeknd, Twilight FM.

The trio will begin their Paradise Again World Tour in July and will be headlining major festivals and arenas through November.

In February, Pophouse announced that Catherine Powell and Alexandra Lutz were joining the board.

Powell is currently, and has been, Global Head of Hosting at Airbnb formerly Disney’s President of Parks, Western Region.

Alexandra Lutz is a partner at the investment firm EQT, whose include investments Success story of Swedish music Epidemic sound.
